Heresy is a word that isn't used much anymore, except in the Bible. Today the word heresy has been all but dropped from the church's vocabulary. That is the greatest heresy of all. And when heresy is rampant it is no longer recognized as heresy, but as normalcy.
The church of Jesus Christ has always been plagued by heresies throughout time. However, in many aspects, the modern invasion of heresies is unparalleled in all of church history. The Apostle Paul's warning about heresies to the first century Christian church has never been more poignant, as he writes in Galatians 5:19-20 (KJV),
"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these...idolatry, witchcraft...heresies." Or again, the Apostle Peter's warning in II Peter 2:1 (KJV),
"But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies...."
This book is about today's damnable heresies, which are being taught in the modern church not privily but blatantly, and are being accepted by the religious and non-religious gullible masses as orthodox Christianity. The English noun "heresy" comes from the Greek word "hairesis", which simply means "opinion" or "sentiment." In short, heresies are opinions not based upon and in direct conflict with fundamental Biblical truths. Opinions are just that – opinions and not facts! If you will, false doctrines which contradict Scripture and which this book systematically exposes and refutes.
Am I a heresy hunter? My answer to that question is that you don't have to hunt for heresies. They are so plentiful and thick these days that every time you take a step, you trip over another one. We are not hunting them, they are hunting us. Whether you and I like it or not, we are on the front lines of the biggest "Truth Vs Heresy War" in church history.
As in Martin Luther's day, few in the religious grassroots knew that there was even a cold war taking place in the Catholic priesthood and hierarchy until Luther's 95 Theses. For centuries the church had been in a slow doctrinal rot. That is how it goes historically, as it seems that history must run its rotting course until it becomes putridly unbearable. We are at the same point again, only worse. No one stood up and protested until courageous Martin Luther. Then it went from a cold war to a very hot war in no time flat. This led to Martin Luther in 1521 being "Dieted at Worms" where he was excommunicated by the church and then declared by the Pope to be an outlaw.
Truth is never defended and falsehood never corrected without a war, and there is always a price to pay. I am sure that through it all Martin looked around many times for like-minded priests and theology professors and asked, "Where is everybody? Why is everyone else so silent?" It all turned out to be much bigger than anyone could have then envisioned. From one faithful protestor Protestantism was born. It only takes one spark to get reformation fires burning. Martin Luther lit his reformation torch and Biblical Christianity was preserved.
